Merrow U10s

On a damp and pretty miserable Sunday morning, Merrow CC U10s turned up to the Shamley Green ground with fingers crossed that the game would go ahead - a damp wicket and more damp outfield. However we pressed on with the game. On the back of two defeats to Normandy and Haslemere, and some resultant focused drills in training, hopes were high for a good performance. With Tom P as captain for the day winning the toss ("tails never fails" apparently), Merrow took to the field to bowl. Adam and Tom P got the innings off to a tight start with 2 wickets in the first over, and restricting only 10 runs from the first pair. Toby and Ajay followed up taking three wickets and restricting only 2 more runs to the nett score. Tom G & Barney assumed the mantle with Merrow taking another 3 wickets in their pair. Sam B and Jamie kept things tight, and Dylan and Ben H assumed responsibility as W&SG strong players tried to take the game to us. W&SG scored 253 off their 20 overs.

Merrow got off to a flyer with Barney & Ajay amassing 38 for the first 4 overs, and then each pair batting batting aggressively as possible. Toby B & Tom G pushed along nicely. Jamie & Sam B came up against some consistent bowling before the hare'em scare'em began. Some (to use an often used phrase) "nutty" batting began. We all like positive running, but sometimes we succeeded in running ourselves out a few times, as well as scaring the hell out of coach and parents alike. Dylan and Ben H eventually calmed the ship down to see Merrow home by 35 runs, with Tom P & Adam keeping us ahead of the game.

There are many points to review after this game. There are many many positives. All contributed. There was good chat in the field, backing up was good, bowling overall good, positive fielding. In terms of batting, running was stronger, more positive, and attacking play evident. We were out a couple of times, but I do not mind that as we were pushing the run rate, and attacking leg side deliveries. All good stuff.

Some of our communication in calling could be better, and perhaps having two batters at one end might be a thing to avoid.... But this is our last game of the season. I will keep notes for the start of next season!!

Win or lose, I (and I hope you are) am proud of ALL the boys. Those who played, and those who were not selected. They have listened, understood what to do and applying it. That is all a coach can ask - and have fun. The boys want to win, but the spirit across all the team is great. Yes they may be occasionally challenging, but they want to do their best and they are learning.

To sign off, some highlights:
Sam B - first Merrow CC wicket!! (According to Umpire Barnesy top of off!!)
Tom G - "Sir, is this middle?" - impeccable.
Tom G - direct hit run out from 15 yards (with Trigger Finger Umpire Barnesy raising the digit of doom)
Dylan - Catch behind the stumps again
Barney - (with full kit today) rattling through scoring 14
Tom P - diving all over the place to stop runs
Adam T - doing his best elephant impression to confirm that his hands were not in his pockets
Ben H - winning style awards with the pinkest possible footwear
Ajay - somehow box protecting back of his knee - perhaps find it when not trying to scamper a single??
Toby - great appealing despite no view of an LBW
Jamie - only conceding 6 off two overs.

Some thanks - Matt H for scoring again and doing a sterling job. Barnesy (son of..) for umpiring with impartiality and being able to count.

We will have to wait and see what the league table looks like. The clubs have a while to play their games. Whatever happens, we have progressed as a unit, and whilst there is plenty to work on, enjoy the summer knowing that the Merrow CC U11s for 2018 is in very good shape.

It has been a pleasure - thank you to the boys and parents.
