Merrow CC Girls U14 hardball

Another piece of history was made on Sunday 7th May at our club ground where Merrow CC hosted Woking & Horsell in an U14 girls hardball match - the first all female hardball game at Merrow CC.

On a grey, damp morning, Woking & Horsell won the toss and decided to bowl, taking a couple of early wickets. But a great 31 retired not out by Rosie Thorpe settled Merrow's nerves, and we were able to post 114 for 6 off our 16 overs.

With Merrow's turn to bowl, we took to the field. The girls bowled accurately, fielded with great discipline. Woking & Horsell's openers batted conscientiously and made a solid start. However a couple of great catches by Merrow's keeper, Eloise, and the tight fielding restricted Woking & Horsell to 74 for 4 off their 16 overs.

It was a delight to witness the game, and credit goes to both teams for playing the game in great spirit and with a smile on faces.

It has been a long journey to get an all female hardball game played at Merrow. It is a great step forward for the U14 girls who up until the start of the season had played softball cricket.

The girls were a credit to their families and Merrow CC. Long may this continue.
